My name is Matthew and this blog is to publish my projects and progress in general in conceptual fashion design, drawing, illustration, and other art nik-naks that I may do along the way. If you have any comments or criticisms I'd love to hear!

Attraction/Repulsion Construction

This is a toille and the start of the construction of my final outcome for my foundation in art and design.

Life Drawing

This is a recent effort from my thursday life drawing classes. Feels quite energentic to me, and was really quick to finish!

Cellophane Corset

I made this corset on the spur of moment. I was looking at ways of experimenting with plastic-y textures to mimic the skin of toy dolls. The cellophane was cheap and I had no money. I ironed a few layers together under a towel to get a thickness I could work with that was still supple.

Life Drawing

This was quite difficult because the model had such small hands and feet! Very enjoyable though..

Open/Close Dress

These images are the follow up garment to the shirt below.. Eventually I gave up on this though, the idea felt a little forced and I couldn't find any zippers long enough so had to cut a load up and sew them together. Didn't make for the most solid of structures...

Open/Close Shirt

These images are from my college project 'Open/Close'. I chose to explore zippers alone and their relationship with the body. As an opening and closing I began to use them metaphorically in my sketchbook development. I made this shirt out of sheer organza to represent the delicacy of skin, the heavy zips as a way of controlling emotions and thoughts we allow in and out, though even those of us with 'thick skin' can find this a difficult task.

Bleached Flour Resist Technique

This is an illustration of a hallway in Manchester City Library. I made it using a flour resist technique on a teal-gray velvet.

Dysperse Life Drawing

This is a really old one, but still one of my favourites. It was drawn with dysperse dye and the transfered on to a piece of poly organza.

Life drawing

This is from my first life drawing session after a few months off... unfortunately the paper got slightly damp on the way to the club and rumpled on one side.... Used this piece for a practise, but got so into it, it ended the best of the session!
